Over the past decade or so, we have seen a massive amount of lying coming from our public officials. From Saddam has WMD so we must invade Iraq, to massive tax cuts for the rich will stimulate the economy and create millions of new, good-paying jobs, to the glut of outright lies ("death panels", "throwing grandma under the bus") about the President's health care plan, to the President is a secret socialist/fascist and wants to sell us down the river - you name it, we've just about heard it all. I thought I would dedicate this particular post to the subject of lying, something our right-wing friends seem to have mastered nearly to perfection and practice shamelessly, nonstop. Aeizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was senselessly and needlessly shot by a young, anti-government assailant earlier today. The shooting occurred as she was doing her job meeting constituents outside of a Safeway grocery store in northwest Tucson, during her first "Congress on Your Corner" meeting of the year.


22 year old Jared Lee Loughner shot Giffords and some 12 others, killing a small child, 4 others, and US District Judge John Roll, who joined the federal court in 1991, and for part of his tenure, had served as chief judge. He had received prior death threats for his decision to let an illegal immigrant sue a wealthy rancher. Loughner allegedly shot the congresswoman "point blank" in the head and may have come from inside the store to do so. Like most gun-toting, trigger-happy cowards, he attempted to flee after running out of ammunition but was tackled by one of Giffords' staffers and is now in police custody.

Loughner’s YouTube account, which is full of anti-government language, an obsession over currency and language standards, and the usual far-right paranoia, is revealing.

It reads, in part, “in conclusion, reading the second United States Constitution, I can’t trust the current government because of the ratifications: the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar,” he writes in one video posting. “No! I won’t pay debt with a currency that’s not backed by gold and silver! No! I won’t trust in God!”

Every United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix is receiving one mini bible before the tests,” he writes in one video. “Jared Loughner is a United States Military recruit at MEPS in Phoenix. Therefore, Jared Loughner is receiving one mini bible before the tests."


Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has issued this statement:

“This senseless attack today in Tucson is a national tragedy, and all America mourns those who lost their lives in the very act of public service. I join the entire Congress in condemning this horrifying act of violence, and on behalf of the entire Senate family, Elaine and I extend our deepest expressions of sympathy and heartfelt prayers to Rep. Giffords and the families of those who have been killed or injured. The U.S. Capitol Police are joining local, state and federal officials in this investigation. We appreciate their quick response and stand ready to assist in their efforts."

Senator John McCain (R-AZ) put out this statement:

“I am horrified by the violent attack on Representative Gabrielle Giffords and many other innocent people by a wicked person who has no sense of justice or compassion. I pray for Gabby and the other victims, and for the repose of the souls of the dead and comfort for their families. I beg our loving Creator to spare the lives of those who are still alive, heal them in body and spirit, and return them to their loved ones. Whoever did this; whatever their reason, they are a disgrace to Arizona, this country and the human race, and they deserve and will receive the contempt of all decent people and the strongest punishment of the law.”

Rep. Giffords had just won election in a tight 3 way race in November. Her vote totals were:

Libertarian Steven Stoltz 11,174 3.94% +1.48%

Giffords was one of the 20 Democrats who were elected in 2008 and voted for health care reform and were then targeted for defeat by Sarah Palin in a "takebackthe20" campaign that included a map showing each congressional district in cross-hairs -- as in a gunsight. Rather incendiary.

Fox "News" and Sarah Palin have long bandied about terms like putting opponents in the "crosshairs", and today we got the end-result of their hateful, inciteful language. Defeated Nevada Tea Party Senate candidate Sharron Angle quipped that voters may get so upset with Washington that they'll take "second amendment solutions" to redress their grievances.

Well, I hope they are all happy, because today, their wholly immature and utterly irresponsible advice was acted upon - for REAL! I HOLD EACH OF THESE RIGHT-WING NUT CASES PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR TODAY'S SHOOTING!

This isn't just reckless hyperbole designed to get attention anymore. SIX REAL PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES NEEDLESSLY, and a number of others will now face the rest of their lives with varying degrees of trauma and physical impairment.

REINSTATE KEITH OLBERMANN NOW!!!

On Friday, MSNBC-TV President Phil Griffin stated that popular prime time TV news commentator KEITH OLBERMANN was being put on immediate indefinite suspension without pay for having made monetary political contributions to three separate Democratic Party candidates in the recent midterm elections. This action was taken because Olbermann had made these donations without having first secured permission from Griffin. According to MSNBC and NBC network policy, making such contributions without first seeking permission from the president of the network is a violation of that policy.

As a progressive who places high value in free speech and individual participation in our political system, I find Griffin's policy and action to be an egregiously offensive and un-American violation of Keith Olbermann's basic civil rights! As such, I am calling on you and all other fair-minded individuals to barrage Phil Griffin and Jeff Zucker, the CEO of his parent company, NBC-TV, with phone calls, faxes, cards, and/or letters protesting this dastardly policy and unnecessarily extreme action. Further, I ask you to join me in a BOYCOTT of these two networks along the lines I describe in a protest statement/letter I urge you to make/send found below.

I base my decision to engage in this boycott on the following considerations:

1). Your policy is a fundamental violation of your employees' civil rights and directly suppresses the exercise of their right to free speech.

2). Your competitor, Fox News, allows their employees to not only make political contributions themselves, but also permitss them to openly advocate the election of specific conservative and Republican candidates by name. In addition to that, they even allow said candidates to solicit contributions ON THE AIR!

3). Mr. Olbermann made his contributions privately, without fanfare, and in no way publicly tied them to your networks.

4). Mr. Olbermann has consistently provided intelligent and informative programming, and has engaged in numerous admirable relief efforts, notably Haiti earthquake relief and the setting up of free clinics across the country for uninsured and poverty-stricken individuals in need of health care. As such, he does not deserve the shoddy treatment you have subjected him to!

5). It was Mr. Olbermann's efforts, far more so than any efforts undertaken by either of you, which have propelled MSNBC beyond CNN into the second strongest prime time ratings for a cable news network. Such an accomplishment should be lauded and rewarded rather than punished for a mere technical violation!

Catch my drift? REINSTATE KEITH OLBERMANN NOW, or the boycott will begin!

Regardless of whether this was merely the result of a personality conflict between Keith Olbermann and Phil Griffin, or a minor technical violation of an unreasonable and unjust corporate policy, the suspension without pay action is unjust and way over the top. As such, we must take strong action against it and voice our disapproval. For, in reality, this is just another in a long line of examples of the exercising of executive arrogance and of conservative corporate forces to discredit and silence prominent liberal and progressive spokespersons.

That is why I am urging you and others you know to express your strong opposition to this action TODAY and to join me in making these contacts, boycotting these network shows, and forcefully making the demand: REINSTATE KEITH OLBERMANN NOW!!!

TIME FOR A CHANGE!

I've been doing a lot of thinking lately, folks. Talking to some old friends this past week, it finally dawned on me: I've been holding on to some flawed assumptions and bad ideas for a long time now. What I present here today may come as a bit of a shock to you, because it's different from what I have been presenting for some time. It may seem as a sudden and abrupt change, because most of my posts are prepared a number of weeks in advance, but this one is a "fresh" one. So here goes...


Let's be honest here. Our country is still in terrible shape, more than a year after Barack Obama took office with a large Democratic majority. So far, very little has been accomplished, other than a pledge to close Guantanamo which hasn't been met, and the passage of a health care bill that I now realize will benefit huge insurance companies more than any of us. Main Street has not benefitted from any of the government's initiatives this past year. Only Wall Street has. The President and his party have saddled us and future generations with debt, overtaxed businesses don't have the money to upgrade or hire new people, federal regulation actually is crippling small business, and millions of our countrymen are imprisoned by unemployment, with no real relief in sight. With Barack Obama, we didn't really get change - only hyperliberalism that has done nothing for anybody EXCEPT WALL STREET. It is time for a change. No, I have not developed a brain tumor or lost my mind, but I have now reached some new conclusions. Please hear me out about this: the Republicans may actually have a valid point in some of their arguments. Please read on - you'll better understand where I'm coming from as we go along...

I have been restlessly channel-surfing of late, and I have discovered that many of the beliefs I once held no longer apply. Having done extensive research into the 9/11 attacks and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as to the true nature of radical Islamic fundamentalism, I now understand that the pre-emptive military action we took was absolutely right. I mean, WE WERE ATTACKED, people! Such an attack must never happen again, and we should do everything in our power to make sure one never does. I never thought I'd ever say it, but I now feel terrible about having called George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld war criminals. They were actually patriotic American heroes to respond to 9/11 as quickly and thoroughly as they did!

Laugh if you will, but I have been watching a lot of Fox News lately, particularly Glenn Beck. I was so impressed by one recent segment that I actually phoned Fox News and was lucky enough to get to speak with him DIRECTLY! I explained that I was a (formerly) left-leaning blogger who had now seen the light, and I complimented him on his vision and deep concern for the well-being of our country, as well as the extensive research and deep thought he puts into what he presents on his show. He mentioned he was familiar with my blog (imagine THAT!), and that he was delighted at my change of heart and outlook. HE EVEN INVITED ME TO APPEAR ON HIS SHOW and that segment will air MAY 3! I am no longer a Glenn Beck skeptic, and I know beyond all doubt he genuinely loves this country, and that his tears of concern for it are real.

During the taping for the May 3 Glenn Beck show, I actually got to meet Sarah Palin! She amazed me with her friendliness and charm. She explained how the mainstream media has mistaken portrayed her as a mindless buffoon, and she amazed me with the wide amount of historical, geographical, and political knowledge she really DOES have...I even learned things from HER! I now know I was mistaken about her, too, and I realize she is very much the concerned-for-her-family-and-loves-America person she has always claimed to be. I co-taped a brief segment with her, too, and I am uncertain as to when that will air, but air it will and I'll keep you posted!


I also had the chance to actually meet Rush Limbaugh recently, too. We were on the same plane and conversed nonstop for nearly two hours. The man is fascinating! He tends to get excitable and spout off from time to time, but deep down inside, he is a very warm and caring man. He also has a tremendous sense of humor. I'm sure if any of you had the chance to meet him, you would like him a great deal, as I now do. Poor Rush. He is suffering so much from his chronic back condition, that it, along with irresponsible spending by the President and Congress, causes him to constantly grimace and seem like a mean-spirited sort. But he really and truly is a very nice guy. APRIL FOOLS'! You have been punked, my friends! Not one word of what I have written up to here for this post is true: In fact, while writing this, it's all I could do to keep from alternately howling with laughter and vomiting. I am still convinced beyond all doubt that conservative Republicans ruined our economy and that their obstructionism has greatly slowed our recovery. I still support a universal, single-payer health care system and increasing taxes on the top 2 or 3 tiers of our income-earners while reducing them for everybody else! THOSE DISGUSTING FAR-RIGHT VIRAL E-MAILS

Pictured at far right (where else?) is Howard Galganov, a far-right Canadian wingnut radio personality who is based in Montreal. Mr. Galganov, the Canadian equivalent of Rush Limbaugh or Michael Savage, wrote and published this hatemongering piece about President Obama last July on his website which just surfaced here in an email I got last Saturday from my cousin. The piece had been sent him from his sister's husband. I have copied and pasted here for you my entire reply to them (containing their original email minus senders' names or email addresses) for you to see not only my response to a piece of hate mail, but to view Galganov's disturbing article in its entirety as well. You'll note that, even before this email had been forwarded to me, it had circulated to numerous other irrational and apparently unthinking Obama-hating people as well. This is typical of the far-right viral emails I get. Some hateful, lying ultra-conservative hatches a vicious wmail, sends it on to his friends, and then it spreads like wildfire as one uninformed hardcore reactionary mindlessly passes it on to another without ever bothering to really examine it or check it out first.

As a member of a diverse and sizable extended family, I get wacko wingnut emails like this all the time. It never ceases to amaze me how normally decent, God-fearing Christians who are outwardly civil and mild-mannered, even gentlemenly, can read, accept, and then routinely and actively pass on vicious lying and unproven allegations like those contained in what you will read below. It shows the irresponsibly rash and unthinking nature possessed by those of conservative bent. I gave these people much more credit than this.

Gentlemen,

I don't want to see any more of this kind of stuff. Not because I'm ignorant, mind you, because I read all sorts of intelligent articles: conservative, liberal, and everything in between. But when I see pieces like this, filled with hate, wild and unsubstantiated claims, and distorted half-truths, I get VERY upset and angry! I don't appreciate the racist undercurrents expressed here either, with this "Hussein" stuff and these ridiculously snide "messiah" and "lordship" terms being thrown around liberally. As far as being an "idiot" who voted for Obama goes, I'll gladly match my IQ against this asshole Galganov's any day of the week. In fact, I'll argue circles around him, and THEN we'll see who the "idiot" is! This guy is Canada's Rush Limbaugh, that's all. He's a radio talk-show personality who makes wild accusations and seldom backs them up with specific facts, and all he does is name-call and make insinuations. He is hardly what I would call a credible source for anything, based on the way he presents his "information" here!

I don't want to see any more of this kind of crap coming my way. It's WAY over the top, and I find it extremely offensive, just as I do most of Limbaugh's insanely hateful rants. For you guys to be sending this kind of stuff around is way beneath you, and I am surprised and disappointed. I love you guys, but I certainly and absolutely don't love this kind of stuff one iota.

Between Obama and Palin - Obama's ONLY ahead by 8 Points and she hasn't even begun to campaign. It seems to me that Obama Wants to be everywhere where he shouldn't be.

He's personally invested in 'totally insulting' America 's ONLY REAL Middle Eastern ally ( Israel ) in favor of Palestinian Despots and Murderers. He's traveling the world apologizing for the USAwhile lecturing others on how to do it right, when in fact and truth he has no experience at doing anything other than getting elected.

He went to the Muslim world in Egypt to declare that America IS NOT A CHRISTIAN NATION while he heaped praises on Islam, where he compared the "plight" of the Palestinians to the Holocaust.

The Russians think he's a putz, The French think he's rude.

The Germans want him to stop spending.

The Indians want him to mix his nose out of their environmental business.

The North Koreans think he's a joke, The Iranians won't acknowledge his calls.

And the British can't even come up with a comprehensive opinion of him.

As for the Chinese, he's too frightened to even glance their way. [After All, China now owns a large portion of the United States .]

Maybe if America's first Emperor would stay home more, travel less, and work a little bit instead of being on television just about everyday or stop running to "papered" Town Hall Meetings, perhaps he would have a little bit of time to do the work of the nation.

In all fairness, it wasn't HARD to be RIGHT in my prediction concerning Obama's presidency, even in its first six months, so I'm going to make yet another prediction:

OBAMA WILL PROBABLY NOT FINISH HIS 4-YEAR TERM, at least not in a Conventional way.

He is such a political HORROR SHOW, and so detrimental to the USA and his Own Democratic Party, that the Democrats themselves will either FORCE him to Resign or figure out a way to have him thrown out.

Who knows, maybe he really isn't a BORN US Citizen and that's a way the Democrats will be able to get rid of him. [He is a citizen, but not a naturalized citizen with both mother and father being US citizens.]

Or - MORE LIKELY THAN NOT, the Democrats will make Obama THEIR OWN LAME DUCK PRESIDENT.

I don't believe the Democrats have nearly as much love for their country as they do for their own political fortunes. And with Obama, their fortunes are rapidly becoming toast.

A mere twenty-five years ago, a pundit like Galganov, or our own Rush Limbaugh or Glenn Beck, would have been regarded by the overwhelming majority of people to be a ranting lunatic or crackpot from the fringes of society. But today, partly due to the efforts of the ever-lying and hyperbolic Fox "News", people like these have been somehow miraculously converted into appearing to be normal, credible, and even mainstream. But realists and those truly in the know on matters of history, politics, or current events still realize this manufactured image is wholly illusory.

WHAT THIS COUNTRY REALLY NEEDS...

Thomas R. Marshall, Vice President under President Woodrow Wilson, was a colorful and witty man, slightly irreverent at times. Once, while presiding over the Senate, a Kansas Republican Senator by the name of Joseph L. Bristow was babbling on and on (as Senators often do) about a long list of things he felt the country needed at that moment. As Bristow droned on, Vice President Marshall leaned over to some nearby law clerks and said, in a voice just loud enough to carry across the Senate floor, "what this country needs is a really good five cent cigar," which caused the chamber to erupt into laughter. I'm not sure if Marshall or Bristow ever got all they wanted back then, but I do know there are a number of things this country sorely needs today, and I have listed a good many of them below.

How about:

* MILLIONS OF GOOD-PAYING NEW JOBS HERE TO REPLACE THE MILLIONS OF GOOD-PAYING JOBS WHICH WERE SHIPPED OVERSEAS OVER THE PAST 10 YEARS? *

A really good $15 box seat at a Major League Baseball game, and a big, delicious $2 hot dog once you're there (instead of the 3-5 times that price we're paying now)?

* Sarah Palin to get a new, better-looking hairstyle and go, along with her entire family, into a deep freeze?

* ALL OUR MEN AND WOMEN TO COME HOME FROM IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN?

* Saltine crackers that can be snapped, like they used to be able to be, without crumbling into fragments the moment you pick them up?

* COMPLETE HEALTH CARE COVERAGE FOR ALL CITIZENS AT A RATE THAT DOESN'T BANKRUPT THEM?

* The rich to get poorer, and the poor and middle class to get richer?


* Fox "News" to go out of business and off the air (or at least to stop distorting and exaggerating, and start telling the truth)?

* Gas at $2 per gallon where it belongs, and no higher?

* Al Qaeda, fundamentalist Muslims, and fundamentalist Christians to crawl out of the Dark Ages and into this 21st Century?

* Corporations to stop buying out individual Congresspersons?

* Republicans to grow a heart and stop thinking only of themselves and big business?

* Hour-long TV shows with only 10 minutes commercial time per hour (like it was many years ago)?

* DICK CHENEY GOING ON TRIAL FOR WAR CRIMES?

* An outstandingly tender and delicious $20 steak dinner with mashed potatoes, gravy, and veggie or salad (and I'm not talking dried-out surloin, either!)?


* Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, and Glenn Beck all getting permanent laryngitis?

* Automobiles routinely averaging at least 50 mpg highway and 35 mpg city (and I'm not talking about little lightweight tin cans, either!)?

* An outstanding $2 bottle of beer?


I'm sure all the rest of you can mimic old Senator Bristow and come up with a number of other suggestions as to what this country needs right now. How about it, readers?

This past week (actually, this past year or so) has provided new all-time lows in American political discourse. When President Obama addressed a joint session of Congress to explain his health care reform plan, especially when he mentioned how his plan would not be available to illegal aliens, he was met with a disgraceful, uncivil, and unprecedented catcall of "you lie!" from Representative Joe Wilson (R- SC). The undeniable fact of the matter, of course, was that the President was speaking the truth, while his Republican counterpart was lying. Those two words in and of themselves epitomized an indisputable truth:

Conservative Republicans lie. Constantly.

Over the past year, we have seen one lie after another spout forth from conservative Republican politicians, pundits, and supporters alike. At the time the President announced his Stimulus Plan to restore the economy that the previous conservative Republican Congresses and President had all but destroyed through 8 years of deregulation, exporting American jobs, and giving huge unneeded tax cuts to billionaires,while running a massively expensive two-front war on credit, Republican Minority Leader John Boehner held a press conference waving copies of a supposed Republican alternative plan which would allegedly cost far less money. That was a lie. The puny, phony, 19 page booklet he held contained the same old tired Republican tax cuts for the rich and free trade recommendations they had been peddling for years, and had absolutely NOTHING new in it and NO cost figures to back it up! Even earlier, when that vile and shrill (but shallow and dense) Sarah Palin was stumping for the presidential election, she made crazy, wild claims about Barack Obama "palling around with domestic terrorists" and having "a socialist agenda." But her latest one, how Obama's health care plan would put disabled or elderly citizens before "death panels" who would condemn them to death to save money, is a real doozy. Those, too, were lies. Obama, many years before, had attended several community education meetings where former Weather Underground activist Bill Ayers was also in attendance. This hardly constitutes "palling around with." Obama has not instituted full state control of American industry and put all American workers on the government payroll, either, so his agenda has hardly been any more "socialist" than FDR's launching of the New Deal or LBJ's creation of Medicare or the War on Poverty were. And nowhere in any public option health care plan are there any "death panels" whatsoever! Malcontent and tax-cheat "Joe the Plumber" misrepresented himself to then-candidate Obama by saying he was a plumber who wanted to buy his boss's business but that Obama's proposed tax plan would prevent him from doing so. John McCain even held this charlatan up as a great American hero. But those, too, were lies. n For "Joe";s name was actually Samuel; he was not employed or licensed as a plumber at the time,; there was no "boss" for him to buy a business from (nor did he have the funds to do so); and people who have IRS tax liens against them, as he had at the time, are hardly "American heroes." Fox "News" commentator Glenn Beck has recently come under much well-deserved attack for saying President Obama was a "racist" who "hates white culture." How patently absurd, considering the President's beloved late mother was white and upon her death the young Barack was raised by her white grandparents! That was another conservative Republican lie. Last Thursday, Fox "News" personality Sean Hannity told yet another whopper on his show, not even an hour after the President had completed his address to Congress. Hannity accused the President of saying that "insurance executives are bad people", when, in fact, the President had said "they are NOT bad people." That Hannity statement was also a lie. A delinerate one.

Fox "News", in general, lies nearly around the clock every single day to slant its news reporting in favor of conservative Republican themes and politicians. Rush Limbaugh is a pathological liar on his radio show every time he's on the air. Even the recent "teabagger" protests, Town Hall disruptions, and Saturday's taxpayer march on the Capitol were lies. Why? Because they were NOT spomtaneous acts of protest by concerned, real grassroots citizens. They were media events planned and executed by Fox "News", Freedom Works, and other far-right lobbying groups opposed to health care reform. The participants, many of them out-of-the-area conservative activists, health insurance employees, and even local Republican Party operatives, were driven in to these events,, often handed scripts on what to say or shout in advance, and many held signs calling the President a "fascist" or a "communist" (see above). These events were staged to create the untrue impression that the majority of Americans oppose health care reform and government involvement in it. They, too, were all lies.

I could go on and on and on and on with other examples of conservative Republican lying over the past 10 years (and even further back). Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and George W. Bush lied us into a bankrupting and unnecessary war in Iraq. They continue to lie to this very day about its legalities and necessity. And conservative Republicans everywhere back them up in lock step...


So now we get a mouthy, pipsqueak conservative Republican Representative Joe Wilson disrepectfully shouting out "you lie!" to a truthful President, and, one day later, House Minority Wimp (I mean, Whip) Eric Cantor and lying loudmouth Rush Limbaugh are making public statements backing Wilson up. President Obama has said he will now begin calling out conservative Republican, special interest lies as they occur. I applaud him for that. SJ of the blog Random Thoughts encourages us to contact the FCC with complaints about specific lies by conservative Republican TV and radio pundits. I join him in this effort and encourage you readers to follow our example. For I hate to break it to all of you conservative Republicans, but the sad truth of the matter is this: YOU lie!!!
